Vrat (Fast) is being deprived of food & water or any liquid food intake for a short period of time with a purpose.

In fact, before anyone considers fasting for any duration or any sort like fasting of food or water should have a definite purpose for the same.

There are many scientific, health and spiritual reasons & benefits of fasting, one of the oldest way to cure and rejuvenate in history.


But what really could be a reason for fasting?


Medical reasons & benefits –

In a few cases it is observed before some medical tests or surgery, doctors & surgeons advice force stop of food & liquid intake prior to the treatment for a short duration. This is to prevent aspiration of stomach contents.

Doctors & dieticians also suggest fasting of various forms for weight loss, calorie/diet management, muscle growth, to improve heart health, give alertness to the body & increase focus, blood pressure, brain function, cancer prevention and simply boasting metabolism.


Spiritual reasons & benefits –

Any and all religions have a history of fasting with different beliefs, durations & sorts.

Spiritually fasting is done for Gods, planets, Gurus, for some festivals and more.

Spiritually benefits include – the lesson of self-control, purification of Mind & body at the spiritual level, donation and devotion.


Few common types of fasts are:

  • Water fasting: drinking only water for a fixed duration (example for 1 day in a week/month).
  • Fruit fasting: eating only fruits for a fixed duration usually without any flavors or salt & sugar.
  • Juice fasting: similar to fruit fasting; only drinking fruit or vegetable juices for a fixed duration
  • Partial fasting: Certain foods or drinks such as non-vegetarian food, animal products, dairy product or caffeine & nicotine are eliminated from the diet for a fixed duration.
  • Calorie restriction: Calories are restricted for a few days example skipping meals or having one meal a day for some duration.
  • Intermittent fasting: Intake is partially or completely restricted for a few hours up to a few days at a time and a normal diet is resumed on other days.
  • Dry fasting: it is a next level fasting not recommended without doctor’s advice, it is done by simply not having any intake or even water for a short duration.
  • Long fasting: fasting for a longer duration together with a specific diet, this should be only done with a dietician or doctor’s advice with a proper meal plan.


My fasting-

I fast in the middle of every week, Wednesday. It has a health and spiritual approach. As per Hindu religion it’s day of Lord Ganesha or Budha(Mercury) – the lord of wisdom, voice(communication) and business/commerce. I being the follower of Lord Budha, I keep my body pure at a spiritual level. I wake up & post my meditation, Yoga Practice and bath I do Pooja(worship) I chant this mantra of Lord Budha for wisdom


Om bum budhaaya Namah


My health approach is since it is the middle of the week, I feel detoxification and lower level of calories to balance my full week’s diet.

My personal observations are- Every Wednesday I feel more energetic and moreover, super focused. I literally feel like doing 3 days work in one day.

My diet includes 1 cup of black coffee, some fruits like apple, plain salad, banana or papaya without salt, sugar or any flavor & 4-5 liters of water.


How to start fasting?


Fasting starts with observation & purpose. Whether is health reason or spiritual, depending on your sadhna or your belief to any Guru, God or Religion? The first step to prepare your body mentally for a fast with specific reasons or motto for fasting. The next step is holding on caffeine, nicotine, tranquilizers, food or in other words simply making a wise habit of choosing what to eat & what not even if you are not fasting, to prepare at body level. It is simply a discipline or schedule of having your food at all times. In fact, we can see the discipline of food intake in animals too, they do follow a cycle when they stop eating food or having water sometimes when they are sick or they are following the cycle of detoxification.  The final step is making our selves strong, if our motto of fasting is to hold on for having food for 2 days and boasting it among our friends or other Yogi’s definitely this is no purpose, in fact, it is making our selves weak mentally. Finally, to adopt any fasting to diet change it is advisable to check with your dietician or doctor.


Fasting for Yoga –

For Yogis, Yoga is a faith. The faith in our own selves. When we have faith in ourselves we have an ability to heal ourselves. It is against our fear, fear of survival in our life without food. We have this belief in our mind that if we do not eat 2-3 times meals a day, we may feel & become weak. This fear stops us to learn, explore and observe the human level of body consciousness and experience what extent our body can do?


The greatest and the deepest meaning of Vrata or fast for a Yogi are to hold a positive attitude, faith, and belief.  Doing regular fasting, Pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation & Yoga makes a Yogi be in the higher state of consciousness and allow our physical body to perform at levels beyond our imagination.

Today Yoga is performed all over the world by people as a part of the daily routine.
People follow various different styles, forms & types of yoga like VinyasaKundalini, Hatha,Bikram, Acro, Ashtanga. Similarly, everyone has different goal or motives behind the regular practice of Yoga. Some do it for work, some for flexibility, weight management, stay fit, look young, and feel strong & energetic. Sometimes just to buy time from busy life and go for yoga retreat and yoga holidays But did we ever think, what is the best way to end our daily yoga class or session? How will that
impact the rest of our day? Example my motive behind the regular practice of Yoga during the early morning session is mental peace, to feel relaxed from busy life, noise, traffic, work pressure and to improve my focus. I end my daily Yoga class by repeating Shanti/Peace Mantra, this gives a peace message to my subconscious mind and doesn’t matter how difficult my day is, I feel mental calmness.
Here are top 11 ways to end your yoga sessions with their impacts on our daily life:

1. Shanti/Peace Mantra– this one is for those crave for mental calmness and peace in daily
life. Simply close your eyes after your session, sit is Sukh- asana(basic sitting posture, with
palms of your hands, facing towards ceiling ) and repeat this mantra at least twice:
Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah(Om, may all be happy)
Sarv santu Nir-Aamayaah(may all be healthy, free from illness)
Sarve Bhadraanni Pashyantu (may all see Auspiciousness)
Maa Kashcid-dukhna-bhaag-bhaveta (may no one suffer)
Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Shanti(Om, peace peace peace peace)
2. Hug – simply hug your yoga teacher and all your yoga mates after the calls. Sounds crazy ?
but this one is to spread the clear message, to love humans, to love everyone. Love everyone
unconditionally, do not judge anyone for what & how they are? Unconditional love is an
antidote to stress and depression. Results will be you will be loved by everyone!
3. Clap your hands – at the end of your class, clap for 100-200 times with a gentle smile on
your face, sitting in such asana (basic sitting posture). This one is best for senior citizens. This
method of ending your yoga session has great benefits like enhanced blood circulation,
cleansing body, improves digestive disorders, relief from back & joint pains, prevention from
diseases like eye problems, hypertension, chronic headaches, cold, insomnia, and depression.
4. Sit down and stand by method – this method is the simplest of all and helps you to slow
down and feel connected to yourself. Simply close your eyes after the session, sit down in sukh
asana, open your hands towards the ceiling and place on your knees. Just relax and observe,
observe your whole body, the stretch you feel anywhere in your body, the relaxation or
whatever you feel? Observe your body and disconnect from the outside world. This is not
meditation, though it is the short technique of observation towards your body post-yoga class.
You should do it for at least 5-10 minute.

5. Shav Asana – this one is similar to point 4, close your eyes, and lie down on your mat facing
towards ceilings. Observe your body and breathe normally, do it for at least 10 minutes. Turn
towards right hand side, while lying down- take 3 deep breaths and now you come back to
sitting position. The Corpse pose or Shav asana has various benefits and help us to rejuvenate &
feel relaxed.
6. Ayurvedic Massage – this one is not possible for all but those who have Ayurvedic massage
facilities available should do it daily post-yoga class. Yoga-Ayurveda has a deep connection from
history and should be part of Dinchariya(daily schedule). Ayurvedic Massage type could vary as
per your Dosha.
7. Walking – this one is the simplest form of workout. It is preferred to do cardio workouts
before a yoga session. Though short walks post your yoga enhance blood circulation and
balance all energy in the body.
8. Meditation – Best way of ending your yoga session is to connect to yourself and do 15-20
minutes of meditation is sukh asana. The way you do meditation may vary & I do not want to
comment on this, rather I recommend this to be learned from your GURU. For me, meditation
is important than any other activity & it is my way of surrender to myself and connection to the
world inside me. If you are quiet enough, you will hear the flow of the universe. You will feel it’s
rhythm. Go with this flow. Happiness lies ahead. Meditation is the key- Buddha Quote
9. Pranayama(vital life force) – these are breathing techniques, which can also be done
before yoga class. Doing Pranayama of various forms post-yoga class helps to control and
practice your breathing patterns. Pranayama has various benefits and is the foundation of Yoga.

10. Bhagwat Gita Saar – The Spiritual way is the best way to end the yoga session for those
who understand and respect spiritual values of life. This method is used in various Yoga
Ashrams in India. Bhagwat Gita or simply Gita is a part of Hindu epic Mahabharata written in
Sanskrit. It teaches various aspects & lessons of life which we should follow in our daily life.
Some parts of these lessons are narrated and explained for 10-15minutes post-yoga class to
become a better human being.


11. Hasyayoga(Laughter Yoga) – invented in 1995 by Madan Kataria, a doctor in India. End

Ayurveda – “the wisdom of life” An Introduction


Ayurveda –Ayurveda is known as world’s oldest known Health science founded in India 5000 years ago.
Word Ayur-veda is derived from word Ayus meaning life or longevity and Veda meaning wisdom.
Ayurveda is said to be founded by Indian Divine Hindu God Dhanvanatari,
Dhanvantari is an avatar of God Vishnu in Hinduism. Vedas (holy Hindu Sanskrit book) talk about
Dhanvantari as the physician of the gods (devas), and the god of Ayurveda.
It is written in the scriptures that, “One who remembers the name of Dhanvantari can be released from
all disease.” Lord Dhanvantari is worshipped all over India as the God of Medicine.
Ayurveda and 5 elements:
According to Ayurveda everything in Universe is made up of 5 different elements in different
propositions. These five elements are called “Panch Bhutas” in Sanskrit. All living & non-living things are
made up of these 5 elements food, stone, animals and everything. Soul is the only difference between
living and non-living things.
These 5 elements or Panch Bhutas are:
1. Earth(Prithvi)
2. Air(Vayu)
3. Fire(Tejas)
4. Water(Jal)
5. Space (Akash)
Each element can be considered as energy pattern and is vital to maintain balance in any body.
Here are few details about these elements appear in Mother Nature:

1. Earth(Prithvi)

The earth element, represents the solid state of matter and along with water is responsible for the
physical constitution of the body. Bones, teeth, and tissues are considered as earth elements. Earth
connects to the nose and the sense of smell.

2. Air(Vayu)

The air element is dry, mobile, light, cool, rough, and subtle.
Air is responsible for many functions within the human body, including movement of food through the
digestive system, elimination of waste, assimilation of food and the health of the skin. Air is related to
movement of thought and thus impacts human imagination and creativity.

3. Fire (Tejas)

The element of fire represents the form without substance and has the power to transfer the state of
any substance. In the body it is responsible for digestion and perception and connected to the eyes and
therefore sight.

4. Water(Jal)

Water represents the liquid state of matter and indicates change or instability. Water is responsible for
the fluid metabolism in the body and so blood, lymph and other fluids are considered as water
elements. Water connects to the tongue and the sense of taste.

5. Space(Akash)

The element of ether represents the space in which everything takes place. In the body it relates to all
hollow or empty places in the body, like channels and pores and the ears that perceive

Doshas & Prakriti
Ayurveda body types: Vatta, Pitahha & amp; Kapha
Prakriti is an inherent nature of an individual determined at the time of our birth, which cannot be
changed during our lifetime. It is the basic constitution of our body and mind formed by the unique
combination of three doshas(Vatta, Pitahha & Kapha)
All of us, have these 3 doshas in different propositions. One or two doshas can be dominant in us as our
prakriti. For an example one of my friend can have 4 course meal as breakfast and has a sleek body
form, though I cannot eat just more than a salad as my breakfast.
Every human has different characteristics and habits. Ayurveda defines it via three doshas.
– Qualities: Light, dry, airy, quick, and cold
– Physical characteristics: Vata is composed of the Space and Air elements.
– Qualities: Hot, sour, pungent, sharp and acidic
– Physical characteristics: Made up of the elements of Fire and Water.
– Qualities: Slow, steady, heavy, oily, and cold
– Physical characteristics: Kapha is mix of the stable energies of Water and Earth
All diseases and illness happen when we live against our inherent constitution. Also, we are most
vulnerable to imbalances related to our predominant dosha. Therefore, Ayurvedic philosophy is not a
one-size-fits-all solution to illness.

Practice yoga and meditation with faith –

Patanjali yoga sutra talks about doubt, doubt which arises in a yogi about the practice

In the divine adventure which we have undertaken the objective is unknown and there are no clearly defined standards by which we can judge and measure our progress.

Doubts of various kinds are therefore liable to arise in our mind.

  •    Is there really any reality to be realized or we are merely pursuing a mirage?
  •    Are the methods we are using really effective?
  •    Are those methods the right methods for us?
  •    Do we have the capacity to go through all the obstacles and reach the goal?

It is at these times that we need Sraddha(faith)— unshakeable faith in our objective, in our self and in the methods which we have adopted. It may not be possible to avoid these periods of depression and doubt especially in the early stages but it is our behavior and reaction to them which show whether we have true faith or not. If we can ignore them even though what we feel about them, we come out of the shade into the sunshine again and resume our journey with renewed enthusiasm. If we allow these doubts and moods to interfere with our Sadhana(practice) and relaxes our efforts, they acquire an increasing hold on our mind until we are completely side-tracked and abandon the path altogether. Hence faith is the base for practicing yoga or simply to connect to yourself.

Faith with meditation –

The power of attention of our mind, when properly guided, and directed towards the internal world, will analyze the mind, and illumine facts for us. The powers of the mind are like rays of light being dissipated; when they are concentrated they illumine everything.

Bringing of mind into a higher state of vibration starts with Samadhi, the super consciousness.

The state of Samadhi is achieved by regular practice of meditation, there is no rule or guidance or steps which we can follow to reach Samadhi while meditation, in fact, it is the faith, faith to our inner world, faith to our belief system, faith to lord we worship. It is a complete surrender to our self, to the God in us

The state of Samadhi comes through faith, energy, memory, concentration, and discrimination of the real.

To start practicing is to find a quiet place in our home or anywhere in our world.

One of the best ways is taught by Swami Vivekananda

Sit in a straight posture, and the first thing to do is start with a powerful mantra; mentally repeat:

“Let all beings be happy;         Let all beings be peaceful;  Let all beings be blissful. So do to the east, south, north, and west.

The more we do that the better we will feel our self. We will find at last that the easiest way to make ourselves healthy is to see that others are healthy, and the easiest way to make ourselves happy is to see that others are happy. After doing that, those who believe in God should pray — not for money, not for health, nor for heaven; pray for knowledge and light; every other prayer is selfish.

Then the next thing to do is to think of our own body, and see that it is strong and healthy; it is the best instrument you have. Freedom is never to be reached by the weak; throw away all weakness; tell our body that it is strong; tell our mind that it is strong, and have unbounded faith and hope in our self.

Yoga is faith in our self and our faith is yoga!
